Grisecon, whose name comes from a series of fantasy novels by Storm Constantine, was born and raised in Illinois, Grisecon started studying piano at 6. He was mesmerized by harmonies and played patterns repeatedly for hours on end.

Grisecon went on to study electronic music and music theory at Oberlin Conservatory. He also studied Indian classical music and just intonation with W. A. Mathieu.

Having lived for years in different parts of the world, including Thailand and South America, Grisecon has incorporated many different sounds from around the world. The track “Psychonaut (Guaracha Mix) uses sounds and thematic elements gathered while they were living in Medellin, Colombia.

“People laugh when I tell them I spent many years writing background music for porn. For me, it was just a great exercise in creating mood and being able to generate music on demand. What is sexy to one person is a turn-off to another, so I had to dig deeper to find the sensual elements in music.”

While being categorized most generally as electronica (vast pallet of sounds, concerned with texture, ambience and rhythm), Grisecon’s work is highly evocative and cinematic. Grisecon works with a collage approach, grabbing disparate samples and sounds and combining them to form new concoctions.

“I would say one fundamental aspect of my work is that it is concerned with exploring the parallel realms of consciousness, whether that’s through altered mental states achieved through meditation, physical activity (such as dancing or sex), or through entheogenic substances, my music is designed to enhance these states.” Grisecon has been a DJ in the California Bay Area for many years, involved with groups such as The Rhythm Society and Comfort & Joy.
