July - Single

July

by Grisecon

July
comes like a canon
to shoot you out
on your twenty-first birthday

you drive
Into the canyon
in the back of the truck
looking up at the sky

you want
to tell him how you feel about him
tell someone
But you can’t find the
Words to say

you lie
On the old army blanket
Shoulder to shoulder
Shirtless and high

are you gonna leave here without knowing
who you could be to each other
it’s your last chance to say now or never
while the radio plays
headlights

after all the years spent with you like a brother
how we ran through the fields every summer
now it’s July and you’re tail lights forever
before the end of the day
before you’re driving away

I cried
When we jumped in together
Fractured my femur
At Devil’s Punch Bowl

You lied
To skip Sunday service
And drive up to Denver
To see Snow Patrol

Fireflies
And spinning constellations
The blunt in my hand
The moon in your eyes

Tonight
The dreams you’ll go chasin’
Are holding their breath
Until you say goodbye

are you gonna leave here without knowing
who you could be to each other
it’s your last chance to say now or never
while the radio plays
headlights

after all of the years spent with you like a brother
how we ran through the fields every summer
now it’s July and you’re taillights forever
before the end of the day
before you’re driving away

You should take to heart these hopes, these hopes
You should be brave... Let him know
It doesn’t matter how far you go you go

He’ll always be,
He’ll always be your best friend

I don't often write story songs but the story of two best friends getting ready to go separate ways as they reach 21 years old arrived sort of whole-cloth to me and it was a fun story to tell.
